South Africa voices concerns to China over Iran’s role in naval exercises
“The naval exercises were led by China, and we were just the host waters,” Ramaphosa told reporters, stressing that China organized the exercises and invited participants. South Africa reportedly asked Beijing to reconsider Iran’s participation.
He added that a board of inquiry has been launched to review the drills and gather more information on the events and appropriate responses. “It is a matter that everyone in defense and in government is seized with at the moment,” Ramaphosa noted, emphasizing a careful approach to the issue.
The drills occurred against a backdrop of heightened US-Iran tensions and global concern over ongoing protests in Iran. Washington recently expressed worry that Iranian involvement in the exercises could threaten regional security. South Africa’s Defense Ministry confirmed that it has followed the president’s instructions and is investigating whether those directives were properly observed.
